Tucked amidst the trees just north of Lutz Lake Fern Road in Odessa, Florida, is Lake Hiawatha, a hidden treasure. The second largest of Odessa’s lakes, Hiawatha offers 135 acres of spring-fed waters spanning both Hillsborough and Pasco Counties. It is a beloved fishing, boating and ski lake that is incorporated into the Brooker Creek watershed.

Once surrounded by citrus groves and farmland (and, most likely, Native American tribes long before that), the shores of Lake Hiawatha are blanketed in natural vegetation, cypress trees and an abundant bird population. Subdivisions and developments surround the lake and adjacent land off of Lutz Lake Fern Road. Some nearby homes that are not situated directly on the waterfront share lake access through the protected wetlands on its southeast shores.

Because Lake Hiawatha is set back and somewhat unknown, development and construction of new lake homes has been steady, but not explosive over recent decades, helping to protect its natural balance. Home sites are large and wooded, most offering acreage with gorgeous waterfront views.

You’ll find two-story cabins, luxury estates with sandy beach-like areas in the back yard, cozy cottages and ranch-style family homes. Some homes are part of subdivisions and others are not. Lake life on Hiawatha includes all kinds of water activities, especially water skiing, and many residents have private docks for fishing, relaxing, entertaining and launching their boats all year around.
